The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree program is one of the highest-quality and best-recognized interdisciplinary studies degree programs in the country. It offers students the freedom to select two concentration areas from a rich menu of more than one hundred possibilities, and it enables students to integrate those areas into a degree with interdisciplinary breadth, intellectual cohesion, and practical value. The core curriculum of the BIS program provides students the intellectual tools needed to integrate their concentration areas, engage in interdisciplinary problem solving, and prepare for careers and graduate programs that increasingly cross academic disciplines.
The four required Core classes to obtain your BIS degree:
BIS 301 Foundations of Interdisciplinary Studies Final Integrative Paper
| Introduces concepts and methods of interdisciplinary study by critically examining anticipated 21st-century workplace and civic trends.
|
BIS 302 Interdisciplinary Inquiry | Explores interdisciplinary and integration as applied to various approaches of human inquiry. |
BIS 401 Applied Interdisciplinary Studies
| BIS 401 offers a remarkable opportunity to apply your interdisciplinary skills and knowledge in an applied setting, to more thoroughly integrate your concentration areas, and to more broadly integrate your theoretical and practical education. This course is designed to guide you through interdisciplinary analyses of your applied site, the site functioning as a case study, or experiential lab. Most of your time will be spent at the applied site, and that experience will be made more meaningful and valuable as you complete a series of analytical and integrative assignments that are submitted online. Prerequisites: C or better in BIS 301 and BIS 302; 2.0 GPA; approved BIS 401 application. |
BIS 402 Senior Seminar | Capstone course helps students integrate their classroom and experiential learning. Students choose among course topics that address their interests. BIS 402 is a capstone senior seminar. In BIS 402, the faculty offer a variety of topics that use interdisciplinary approaches to explore an issue. Students are encouraged to select the topic from those available that semester, which best fits their interests. Course descriptions are listed below. If not otherwise indicated, the sections will be offered for the spring 2008 semester. |
